The cool, calm and collected voice leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Respect Pledge each and every morning is that of junior Loriana Harkey.
She was selected by Forensics coach Becca Hier to fill the shoes of a former classmate that had graduated last year. Unlike two years ago when a different person said the pledge each day, Harkey provides a consistent voice.
“It helps me get to school on time and I enjoy having the opportunity to spread good words,” Harkey said.
While she spoke in the past for announcements during bullying week, she had never done a consistent announcement like the pledge.
“I decided to do it because it is a fun and rare opportunity and I hadn’t done something like it before,” Harkey said.
Sometimes saying the pledge affects her first hour class if she has a test but for the most part it is only about a two minute lapse in time she misses.
“I just had to explain to my first hour teacher that I would be a little late because I was saying the pledge,” Harkey said.
