For many students, their schedules can get overwhelming for them. For some, however, they are willing to sacrifice much of their free time in exchange for being more active and to prepare for their upcoming career. Senior Harris Stay is one of these students who is fully committed to preparing for his future.
“I’m planning on going to the military, doing either just a field medic or a nurse,” Stay said.
Even as a high school student, Stay has found ways to prepare for his future occupation in the medical field.
“I’m doing medical terminology, sports medicine, and doing my BLS certification,” Stay said.
In getting the Basic Life Support, or BLS certification, Stay is afforded the opportunity to help the EMT members on the football field. His job is to help stabilize anyone who is in need of medical attention and help them get to better care. In addition to his training, Stay is also a set leader in theater.
“I am in charge of making sure people are staying on task and making sure we’re on our time limit to our place, so stuff gets done,” Stay said.
Stay has demonstrated that he has the ability to take on the role as a leader. These types of roles can help Stay for his future career roles.
“He’s calm most of the time, and he will get straight to the point, but also at the same time being goofy sometimes,” freshman Patrick Nikolaus, set crew member under Stay, said.
With all of these activities crowding his schedule, Stay still finds time to make extra money with his job as a freight coordinator at Ace Hardware. He’s able to use these funds to give himself a head start after graduation and give him helpful experience for his future.
The roles that Stay has often interfere with each other. Stay said he has had a lot of long weekends and working double shifts. From his experiences in all of his fields, he has learned tactics to stay oriented with work, along with tips for students who want to push themselves.
“Prioritize things, make time for the people around you,” Stay said. “Try new things. I tried all kinds of things, and I enjoy them.”
