As the year comes to a close, finals are around the corner. Maybe you’ve already taken them, or maybe you’re waiting for those last few days where all the finals seem to lay, waiting to be taken. Bundled with the chaos of the end of the school year, the finals bring a slew of panic and mayhem. Finals are arguably one of the more important and stressed tests of the school year, as these tests usually contain material that covers the entire semester.
One main issue of finals is the declining performance of students, especially seniors, as the year progresses. This condition is commonly known as “senioritis,” and is prevalent in the majority of students during this time of the year. Contrary to popular belief, senioritis can apply to those of all grade levels.
All the stress that goes toward finals doesn’t even seem worth it, as finals seem to only be 10% of your total grade, at least from my experience. That built up anxiety keeps students completely focused on studying for finals and not working toward any other schoolwork. According to an article from TimelyCare, finals are the biggest factor of stress in the final weeks of the school year.
Advanced Placement, or AP tests are given for those who take college level courses in high school. The tests, which are given in a two week span near the end of the year, last multiple hours and go over material from the entire year of that class. AP classes likely have finals alongside the AP tests, which make them more time-consuming and stressful.
This duo of tests may add to the stress of the final weeks of the year which, according to an article from the Honor Society, may lead to extra symptoms, such as sleep deprivation and burnout. An easy solution to this problem would be to eliminate finals for those taking the AP tests. This solution does exist in a select few of AP classes, but not for the wide majority of them.
Finals are important, but it is also important to take care of yourself. A nice mix of studying and relaxation are most crucial, and it’s smart to give yourself some leeway in between classes to take a breather and calm down. With the year almost over, it’s easy to forget how to stay in the loop of studying and working, but it’s only a few more days to try your hardest.
