Newcomer Freya Skye released a song called “Can’t Fake It.” While the song was outside of the music I tend to listen to, I can’t say that that’s a bad thing. I grew up with this style of music playing on the radio in the car, so seeing it revived in the great year of 2025 with this song is a very pleasant surprise and a nice experience.
Overall, while I don’t think I’d go out of my way to recommend everyone to listen to this song on a whim, it is a song I would suggest others should give a shot if they’re looking for something in the similar style.
Listening to the lyrics, it’s a simple yet effective story of the very familiar theme of not being over a potential lover or ex. With lyrics like “Hope that one day I’ll agree that you’re old news too,” “Wanna say it’s over but I just can’t fake it,” and “How did we go from that to never texting back? I don’t understand, we got so off track. But I’m not even sad about it, maybe just bitter,” you can very quickly get the idea that she is upset at some potential ex-partner of hers, but still not over the relationship they had, sounding almost tired or sick of it.
Tuning out of the lyrics and to the track and music behind it, it’s quite simple and doesn’t entirely overplay the lyrics with anything complex that’s hard to attach to. Her voice is independent but fitting to the track, keeping with the beat of it and not like she’s lagging behind. Every so often, there’s a layer added to it to keep it interesting, but still keeps the same original base.
I’m not too overly fond of the vocals. Skye has a nice voice, but there’s something about it that I am not too psyched about. Part of that could be just my taste in music affecting my opinion, but I’m inclined to say it’s her tuning that bumps the ranking down a little bit for me.
The only thing that truly confused me about the song was the music video. The song itself had a pretty clear meaning: it was about a breakup and her issues grappling with it. But what does an office setting have to do with that?
That’s the only question I walked away from this without any answers to. The music video takes place in a setting very reminiscent of your typical 9 to 5 at an office building. While I’m sure there is some sort of reasoning behind it, it ends up lost on me.
Overall, I like this song. Is it something I’d listen to on my own time? Not particularly, but I wouldn’t complain if it was on the radio or idly playing in a store of some sort. I’m fond of the upbeat pop nature of it, not too overly fond of the vocals, the meaning of the song is solid and consistent, and overall it’s a song I’d simply jam out to on the radio in the car before channel surfing. If I had to give it a rating out of 10, I would choose a 7/10. A solid song, but not my ultimate favorite.
