There are many different ways to celebrate various upcoming seasons and celebrations: spring cleaning, Memorial Day fireworks, or unpacking summer clothes and swimsuits. Another ways many people celebrate the upcoming change of the season is May Day.
May Day, May 1, is a European holiday, also called May Eve, celebrated in many cultures, depending on the way it’s known.
Its origins coming from ancient Europe, with the British Isles, it is celebrated as the upcoming change of the season, spring in the Northern Hemisphere. When the Romans took over the British Isles, they adapted the holiday into their own, known as Floralia.
This new holiday became a way to memorialize the goddess of flowers, Flora. This new holiday became a way to memorialize the goddess of flowers, Flora. With a five day celebration, they worshiped and praised Flora which eventually combined with the original version of the holiday.
Another way the holiday is, and was, celebrated is with the Maypole dance.
With its origins unknown, the Maypole dance is exactly what it sounds like. In the center there is a pole that stands upright with ribbons attached coming down that people hold onto. Each person involved has a ribbon in their hand and they rotate in a circle around the pole.
Eventually, the holiday has ventured into different cultures and became different holidays known and celebrated today.
For example, the most common way it is known in America is International Workers’ Day. Also known as Labor Day, International Workers’ Day is a day to celebrate workers as a whole, no matter the kind of work. This originally came from the connections the holiday had with labor rights that were beginning in the United States during the 19th century.
Labor being high, everybody was working, and millions of women, men, and children dying was what made labor rights beginning to be looked at to begin with. Many people choose to celebrate this by showing appreciation or giving workers gifts and showing you care.
The holiday can also just be the celebration of summer, or spring, with May Basket Day.
Bringing gifts to neighbors, for example, is a way to do that with items inside such as summer, or refreshing, related drinks, foods, and cards to bring upon the new season. It can also be more than just neighbors and can bring joy to more than just the people close to you.
May Day is a way to make people happy, show your appreciation, and include people around you. It is also a great reminder about the season that is going to come and everything that comes with it. Ultimately, May Day is a holiday to be celebrated by anyone, no matter what way it is celebrated.
