Many clubs here at Bellevue West can prepare you for your life after high school. Many aspiring teachers join Ed Rising to learn about being an educator and to meet people with similar goals. Sophomore Dean Compton said talking with like-minded individuals about teaching and education is what the club is meant to do.
“It helps to bring people that want to teach together, so that they can learn from each other,” Compton said.
For new Ed Rising sponsor Deanna Vavak, preparing students for life after high school, and giving them skills and experiences to fall back on is what she wants the club to do for students.
“They’ll just be more comfortable with their decision, and they can learn some steps that they could do in high school to prepare them for college,” Vavak said.
This club focuses a lot on trips and activities, and these hands-on experiences can help students with other aspects of becoming educators.
“We did the trunk or treat at the elementary and that was really fun,” Vavak said, “We’re planning to do some activities for Read Across America Day to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday.”
For Brooklyn Mickells, a sophomore, this club is important in developing life skills, such as working with other people with similar interests. The overall positive environment makes it easier to learn and have discussions.
“Everyone’s very close and welcoming,” Mickells said.
This is Vavak’s first year running the club, but she is very optimistic about the club’s future.
“We are just finding our wings and getting started, but we’ve done some fun things,” Vavak said, “If other students are interested, they can just check the morning announcements for when we’re meeting.”
