Mooshoo’s five clever DIY Halloween costumes

A Holy Cow

The “Holy cow” is super cute and easy to assemble. It’s not much to put on and it’s comfortable, so it works well for parties. It only took me around 30 minutes to actually put everything together (minus the drying time for the paint). The hardest part for me was trying to make the halo stand up straight. I also added a little bit of pink face paint for my nose to emphasize the cow look.

Materials needed:

-Black acrylic paint

-Hot glue

-Headband

-Scissors

-2 white pipe cleaners

-White t-shirt

-Black felt fabric

-2 cotton balls

-Pink face paint (optional)

Ears

  1. Cut out two diamond shapes from the black felt. You’ll use these to create your cow ears.
  2. Place the diamonds under the headband around where ears would be.
  3. Fold each diamond in half to form a triangle shape.
  4. Hot glue the diamond middles to the headband so it will stay on, and then hot glue one side of the ear, so there will be a triangle.
  5. Tuck in a cotton ball between the folds and glue the final piece together, sealing the ear. Do the same with the other diamond on the other side of the headband.

Halo

  1. Bend a white pipe cleaner into the shape of a circle.
  2. Take another pipe cleaner and wrap around 2 inches of it around the side of the circle.
  3. Wrap the other end of the pipe cleaner around the center of the headband so the halo stands up. I’d suggest using more pipe cleaners to add more support to the first one holding up the halo.

Shirt

  1. Now, with the white shirt, paint big black blobs all on the front with the black acrylic paint, creating a cow pattern. Allow the wet paint to dry for at least one hour before trying to put it on to prevent smears.

404 costume not found

“Costume not found” is insanely easy to make. You can wear anything as long as you have the sign to go along with it. It took me less than a minute to put together. Brownie points if you wear this costume with a black Morphsuit.

Materials needed:

– Black outfit (optional)

– Paper

– Marker

Sign

  1. With a marker, write “404: Costume not found!” on the piece of paper.

Copycat

“Copycat” is pretty nerdy, but it adds a little more depth to the basic cat costume from 2014. Hopefully all of your friends get this pun, but if they don’t, maybe it’s time to let them go. The headband ears are the same ones from the “holy cow” costume, so if you figured that out, you can apply it here. If you feel odd about wearing this, you could just write “404: costume not found!” on the other side of the sign, ditch the ears, and boom: a brand new costume!

Sign

  1. Use a marker to write “ctrl + c” on a piece of paper.

Whiskers

  1. Use black face paint or eyeliner to draw a dot on your nose and whiskers to your face to add an extra “cat” look to your costume.

French Kiss

“French kiss” is so incredibly punny and will totally get your dad’s approval. The most important part of this costume is the face paint–you’ll want to make sure it’s neat and dry before you go out. I got my palette of face paints at Walmart and they’re not the greatest quality, but they definitely do the job. You could also elevate it by adding some classic french props (a baguette, a handlebar mustache, cheese, etc.)

Materials needed:

-Black and white striped shirt

-Red lipstick

-Black and white face paint

-Beret

Face

  1. Using the white face paint and a sponge brush, cover your whole face, except the eyebrows.
  2. Using the black face paint and a precise paint brush, draw a big black star over top your right eye.
  3. With the black face paint, also cover your left eyelid and the lower lash line.
  4. Apply the red lipstick on your lips.

Negative Space

This is the costume I like the most out of this bunch. It is open for creative interpretation and can be as detailed as you want. I added galaxy makeup just to spice it up a little bit, but that’s totally optional.

Materials needed:

– Black outfit

-Markers

-Paper

_Scissors

-Tape

Space

  1. With the markers, draw various planets and stars on paper
  2. Give them all sad faces
  3. Cut them out with scissors
  4. Tape the shapes to your body
