Christmas Craft: Create a winter scene

December 2, 2021

For this upcoming holiday season, spruce up your house with DIY holiday decor. This year, I decided to make a mason jar scenery. For this you’ll need:

  • Mason Jar
  • White and Blue acrylic paint
  • Styrofoam
  • Cotton balls
  • A Medium Sized Bowl
  • Craft Glue
  • Fake Trees (make sure they are small enough to fit within the mason jar)

First, mix the blue and the white acrylic paint to form a light blue color. Paint mountains, or any background feature you want, on the outside of the mason jar. Make sure to leave one side unpainted as that will act as the window into your mason jar. The mountains don’t have to be detailed at all, but instead can just be simple upside down V’s. After painting them, make sure to fill them in with the light blue color.

Afterwards, let it dry and paint on darker blue mountains. The darker color behind the lighter color will add more depth to your painting. Finally after adding mountains, mix blue acrylic paint and a small amount of black acrylic paint. This will be the night sky behind the mountains, you can also add clouds or stars with white paint, but make sure to paint those on and let dry before painting the sky behind them.

Let the jar fully dry.

Then, make the fake snow. To make the snow, grind up the styrofoam into small pieces and place into a medium sized bowl. After grinding it up, add craft glue into the mixture, you may need a little bit more or less depending on how much styrofoam you have. The mixture should be stuck together, but shouldn’t be too liquidy as you still want it to retain some structure.

Add the styrofoam-glue mixture into the mason jar. Fill the mixture as far as you like, but make sure to not completely cover the mountains. Press down at the bottom of the mixture to form small indents where the fake trees will go. If you want to, you can tear apart cotton balls and glue them atop the snow to add texture.

Let the snow mixture dry completely. After the snow dries, add the trees into the mason jar. To add the trees, simply glue where you would like them on the snow and press down firmly. Have the whole jar dry before moving.

Finally, you can add extra details. If you want to, you can tie ribbons to the cap of the mason jar and add it around the jar. After finishing your mason jar, you can use it to decorate your house or give it as a gift for the upcoming holidays.
