The Thunderbeat was founded in December 2011. After attending a journalism workshop at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, student journalists from Bellevue West’s video yearbook and newspaper staffs joined together to create a website. Their goal for the website was to provide a direct link to the public to provide news, entertainment, sports, and features coverage that previously was only available to students and faculty in the building.
Beginning in September 2015, the newspaper was renamed The Thunderbeat to provide a more cohesive journalistic venture. Thunderbeat Gold was created to showcase short films and other creative pieces produced by journalists from the video yearbook staff. The Thunderbeat also hosts links to live streams of sporting and cultural events, The Escape Key literary magazine, and the print version of The Thunderbeat.
The Thunderbeat is advised by Ms. Julie Rowse and Mr. Aaron Stueve.
